The county maintained Emerson Point park hosts a number walking and kayak trails to explore. The watchtower, several beaches and many Indian mounds make this one of Manatee County's best place to see the real Florida. There is access to the park by car during daylight hours. Kayaking along the North shore of Snead Island you will see many fish, birds, and possibly manatees or dolphin. it takes about an hour to reach the beach at Emerson Point paddling west through Clambar Bayou, past the watchtower. Along the shore are various bays and creeks to explore. (see Google earth map ,right) Many fishing opportunities for Trout, Snook and Redfish can be found paddling this area. Check the shoreline throughout Clambar Bayou and the deeper channel near the oyster bars you will pass. The grass flats also hold many spotted sea trout. Around the western tip of Snead Island and across the Manatee River is believed to be the spot Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto came to shore during his voyage to America. Look for the large cross to find the park. There are some nice walking trails and a neat replica of an early period campsite. Farther West at the mouth of the Manatee River is the brand new Robinson Preserve (opening fall 2007) Deep channels, lakes and 12 or so campsites make this Manatee County's premier park with a restored marine habitat. |
