Bird Key is a protected island rookery. Please adhere to the posted signs. Birds are here throughout the day, but at sunrise and sunset they are quite numerous and active. Ospreys, Herons, Egrets, Ibis, Pelicans, Cormorant and Roseate Spoonbills, as well as other birds nest here. You can watch and photograph the birds from your kayak without any trouble. Care must be taken not to disturb them, but this a a great birding opportunity. The round trip is about 1.5 -2.5 Hrs and requires paddling out to the middle of Terra Ceia Bay.
This trip is an excellent birding kayak tour and also includes great opportunities for fishing.
Sometimes, especially afternoons in the summertime winds can be very strong on the bay and sometimes shift when thunderstorms approach. Caution is urged and use of your lifejacket is highly recommended during these times.
